Label TextThe first successful friction matches were produced in 1829 under the name “lucifers” by Samuel Jones, an Englishmen. Safety matches followed in 1855 and the “strike anywhere” type was patented in 1888. Smokers could carry some matchsafes in their pockets, but this one was intended for stationary use.
