Label TextDuring the 1740s Canaletto enlarged his repertory of painted subjects. Picturesque views of the Venetian mainland, famous sites in Rome as well as imaginary scenes supplemented the Venetian subjects that were so popular among the English tourists who collected his works. This print is part of an important suite of thirty-one etchings Canaletto made between 1741 and 1746. Some of the works in this suite are fanciful views while others were "taken from actual spots," perhaps with the use of a camera obscura which Canaletto is known to have used as an aid to composition. Canaletto dedicated this collection of prints to the English merchant Joseph Smith who was appointed British Consul in Venice in 1744.
