Label TextAlthough primarily known as a portrait painter, Thomas Hicks painted these three views of Trenton Falls for his friends Michael and Maria Moore, who owned and operated the Trenton Falls Hotel where he and his wife would stay in the summer during their vacations from New York City. Although considered sacred land by the Haudenesaunee Confederacy of First Nations peoples, the site was operated as a tourist attraction throughout the 1800s until it was harnessed for hydro-electric power around 1900, providing electricity for much of central New York State, including the city of Utica.
