Label TextNaturalistic motifs were popular in frames dating from the 1850s. In this example, which complements the naturalistic subject matter of Mignot's painting, the outermost edge features a stylized leaf motif alternating with strap work over a fluted ground. The prominent top edge (the ornament closest to the viewer), is decorated with a finely detailed branch or twig pattern. Leaf and berry clusters further embellish this edge at the corners and in the center of all four sides. The principal ogee-shaped molding is decorated with strap work over a fluted ground. This frame has no documentation indicating who or in what city it was made, but the high quality of its applied ornament indicates that it was made by a skilled frame maker. It is in fairly good condition but probably has been refinished. In areas where the gilding is lost a gray bole is visible. This clay-like material would have been applied to the compo ornament before the frame was gilded and, typically, is gray or red in color. Paul D. Schweizer August 2010
