DescriptionPieced quilt top consisting of a printed cotton center panel showing the coronation of Queen Victoria at Westminster Abbey. At the 4 corners of the center panel there are 4 inked stamps. Above and below the center panel are 10 pieced squares within printed cotton borders. The back is lined with plain weave fabric that is turned to the front to bind the edges. The layers are quilted together with fine stitching in an interlocking circle pattern.On View

At just 18 years old, her coronation was a major event commemorated in prints, ceramics, and fabric. This quilt incorporates one such fabric panel, representing the moment the young queen is crowned in Westminster Abbey. The panel is surrounded by red and white floral printed fabrics arranged in a saw tooth pattern with a border of running vine and flowers.
The identity of the maker is unknown, so we can only speculate that it was made in England, the United States, or Canada. In the United Kingdom printed panels that commemorate important state events and military victories were incorporated into quilts and bedcovers to demonstrate one’s patriotism in much the same way that Americans incorporated printed portraits of presidents and American flags into their own quilts.
