Label TextDuring the second half of the Victorian era women usually adhered to rigid mourning customs, which required them to wear black in specific materials, for specific lengths of time depending on their relationship to the deceased. This fan with its subdued ornamentation was perhaps used by either Maria or Rachel Proctor, for the death of their father James Watson Williams in 1876 or their mother Helen Munson Williams in 1894.
