Label TextThe nun, Anna of Utrecht, inserted this anonymous, early 16th century woodblock into a prayer book she made during the 83rd year of her life "without glasses, with God's grace." The gold leaf she applied to the print underscores the otherworldly divinity of the two figures. Equally, it links the Virgin's image to a famous description in the Book of Revelation of "a woman clothed with the sun," a passage the Middle Ages regarded as the biblical source for images of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.
