Label TextIn the late 1960s and 1970s photo-realist artists, including Robert Cottingham, began using photographs rather than figures, landscapes or other subjects as their source of inspiration. The prevalence of photographic imagery in contemporary culture made it a compelling medium from which to borrow for fine art purposes. Cottingham typically uses urban signage and, in this case, he extracted a slice from a movie marquee, an "art house," hence the witty title for this work of art. MEM 2002
