Label TextSaint-Gaudens was the leading American sculptor of his age. This bronze is the culmination of his work over many years on the subject of a classically clothed female figure. The angel of "Charitable Love" or, possibly, "Sacred and Profane Love," has both ancient Greek and Italian Renaissance precedents. The original version of the relief, a heroic-sized bronze over eight feet tall, was exhibited by Saint-Gaudens at the Paris Salon of 1899 and the Exposition Universelle in 1900. It was purchased by the French government and is now in the Louvre, Paris. Another large version is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Because of its popularity, Saint-Gaudens also had smaller versions like the museum's cast, which were sold by Tiffany in New York City and by Doll & Richards in Boston.
