Label TextThis artist, Raphaelle Peale, was one of the first American artists to excel at still-life painting, which presents objects in a certain way to invite the viewer to look closely at their arrangement, details, color, and shape. Still-lifes often depict commonplace things or a combination of elements that could make up something else. The focus here is a hearty slab of steak, which spills over the table into the painting's foreground, as if it were possible to touch. Behind the steak are vegetables—a thick head of cabbage, a beet, and savory carrots—all the ingredients of a hearty beef stew or perhaps a Yankee pot roast!
