Label TextReginald Marsh is famously remembered for his depiction of urban life in New York City through paintings, drawings and etchings; the Museum has several works on view on the AO level. His pieces contain much detail and accuracy of the life he worked to capture. He portrayed all of his subjects, including people of all social classes, with insight and emotion.
Artist Kenneth Hayes Miller (1876-1952) taught at the Art Students League and his students included Marsh, who considered Miller to be a great friend and mentor. Miller was originally from the Oneida Community in Sherrill, New York, but as an adult resided in New York City. He believed that his best subject matter was what surrounded him, an idea that greatly influenced Marsh. His paintings were often of women in New York, shopping, walking, and doing their daily activities. Miller also painted nudes and landscapes, developing a style that was uniquely his own and not conforming to any particular school of art.
