Label TextCommissioned by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Hell Gate Bridge crosses the East River between Randall’s Island and Queens, New York (the name comes from the river’s particularly dangerous currents there). The bridge was constructed between 1912-17 and continues today as a route for freight and the Amtrak Northeast Corridor.
Hell Gate Bridge boasts an impressive spandrel arch design and heavy masonry towers. The massive construction symbolically conveys the strength of American industry in the early 20th century. Lozowick’s image enhances that powerful spirit. He minimizes details and emphasizes clean, upward-moving lines of the architecture. The boats passing in its shadow are mere silhouettes.
