Label TextTiepolo was the greatest Italian Rococo artist. He most important achievement in the realm of painting were the large ceiling decorations he executed in palaces in Italy, Germany and Spain. He painted these murals in an airy, flamboyant and theatrical style, with delicate colors and an extraordinary degree of illusionism. Important themes that run through all of Tiepolo's art are the notions of fantasy and caprice. He explored this latter idea in a series of ten prints first published in 1743 and then reissued posthumously with the title, Various Caprices Invented and Etched by the Celebrated G. B. Tiepolo. In this example Tiepolo used a minimum number of lines to depict a nymph and young satyr reclining in a bucolic setting.
