Label TextStephen Westfall has been described as "a romantic with a classicist's restraint." At first glance, his painting Ponticino seems reserved and geometric. At closer inspection, the museum visitor will find that Westfall painted the composition with subtle, warm and sensuous color. In addition, the artist has described his lines as a "slipped grid" which might represent tile work, a street map, or a window. Symbolically, the window suggests a threshold through which a person could move, as if between an exterior and interior space, or from a mundane towards a transcendental or spiritual realm. MEM
