Label TextThis portrait of the aristocrat, Charles Fitzroy, was published about twenty-five years after Godfrey Kneller, England's most prominent portraitist during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, painted an oil portrait of him (now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London), which was the source for this print. The mezzotint was engraved by John Faber for the suite of prints he made of the liberal politicians and talented young writers who were members of London's famous Kit-cat Club. The engraving shows Fitzroy wearing on his chest the star of the Order of the Thistle, England's most prestigious knighthood, which he was awarded in 1721. This occurred three years before his appointment as Lord Chamberlain, which placed him at the center of the English court during the reigns of George I and George II. The competency with which he performed his ceremonial duties was the subject of much contemporary, satirical debate.
