Label TextA military officer during the American Revolution, Peter Gansevoort successfully defended nearby Fort Stanwix at what is now Rome, New York, against the British army and their Indigenous allies. Though his efforts in battle moved the American forces closer to victory, that success came at the expense of many Native American villages destroyed and civilian lives lost. After leaving the army, Gansevoort returned to his native Albany, New York, where he managed the family lumber and brewing businesses.
