Label TextIn the final years of the 18th century Goya produced a series of eighty prints titled Los Caprichos ("fantasy" or "an expression of imagination"). The series is a scathing commentary on the follies, superstitions, and prejudices of humankind. This famous image from the series-a trenchant critique of his age's Enlightenment ideals-is a brilliant illustration of the idea that when the rational side of mankind's brain is held in check, his dark emotions and nightmarish visions are unleashed.
