Label TextBonington had only four years to live when, at the age of twenty-two, he produced this lithograph. It was made the year his reputation was established in France by winning a gold medal for a painting he exhibited at the Paris Salon. It is one of a number of exquisitely executed views he made of various picturesque or--as the text at the bottom of this image suggests--historically significant sites in the towns and cities of northern France. Prints such as this impressed Bonington's fellow artists in France and England. The painters Théodore Géricault and Joseph M.W. Turner both acknowledged the influence he had on their work.
