Label TextCast-iron urns, the profile and adornment of which were indebted to classical antecedents, commonly graced nineteenth-century house exteriors and gardens. In his influential book Cottage Residences (1842), arbiter of taste Andrew Jackson Downing suggested that "a few pedestals with vases or other sculptural objects" provided a "harmonious union between the architecture and the landscape, or, in other words, between the house and the grounds."
In 1859 Linus Dean founded L. Dean and Company on Whitesboro Street in Utica. The company produced iron fences, railings, balconies, verandahs, flower vases, settees, lawn chairs, and building materials.
