Label TextThe Museum of Art owns several paintings by Theodoros Stamos, thanks to benefactor Edward W. Root, who collected a great deal of Stamos's work. In 1991 a collector who had known Stamos in the 194os offered this pastel, Rockport, Maine, to the Museum. The Museum accepted the gift enthusiastically, because the early phase of the artist's career was not previously represented in the collection.
Stamos drew this seaside scene in an intentionally naive manner, to emphasize the formal properties of color and shape. When he drew this pastel, Stamos was influenced by another American artist, Milton Avery, whose paintings can be seen on the second floor of the Museum of Art.
