Label TextDavis created an essentially American abstraction based on his interpretations of popular culture, especially advertising and jazz. He suppressed the illusion of three dimensions in his compositions by simplifying forms into flattened, overlapping shapes which he then organized into rhythmic patterns with vibrant colors.
Davis spent his summers painting and drawing in Massachusetts seaside towns, such as Provincetown and Gloucester. He liked the rocky coast, the surf and the busy ports: “It was an adventure to go through the piers, the houses on the piers and look at the whaling gear.”
