Label TextA loving cup is a large ornamental wine vessel usually made of silver. Traditionally a loving cup has two or three handles and is used as an award to the winner of sporting contests. The Stanley Cup, presented to the National Hockey League champions, is an example of a modern loving cup. This piece was presented to Thomas Proctor (1844-1920) in commemoration of his many contributions to the town of Richfield Springs. Born in 1844 in Proctorsville, Vermont, Thomas Proctor came to Utica in 1869 to become the proprietor of Bagg's Hotel. In 1875 he purchased the Spring House in Richfield Springs and was a leading force in making Richfield Springs one of the best known and successful eastern summer resorts. The inscription on the cup reads: Presented to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas R. Proctor by the Citizens of Richfield Springs, N.Y. July 3rd, 1918 At a Testimonial Dinner At Bloomfields's In Honor of Mr. and Mrs. Proctor And Their Guests Governor and Mrs. Charles S. Whitman PC
