Label TextMost of nineteenth-century America's expansionist ambitions were focused on the western parts of the North American continent, but some people also advocated that the boundaries of the United States be extended southwards into Central and South America and northwards to the Arctic. Bradford capitalized on America's interest in the exotic lands of the northern polar region. From 1861 to 1867 he made annual expeditions to the area around Labrador where he made photographs and original studies of fishing vessels, icebergs, and picturesque coastal scenes like this drawing, which is reputed to be from a sketchbook Bradford used during his travels in 1864.
