DescriptionThe basket has an oval base composed of coiled broomsedge grass ropes bound together and layered to build the sides that flare outward to the handles then inward to the top. The handles are part of the construction of the basket (two rows attached to one another, free form the body of the basket). Each bundle is 1" thick. According to "Historic Louisiana Nails: Aids to the Dating of Old Buildings" (1993) by Jay D. Edwards and Tom Wells, the nails used in the bottom support of the basket are most likely Type 6b/c, made between 1828 and 1837.On View
