Label TextSpencer Finch chose to dye and arrange these papers based on his study of the Hudson River, called Mahicannituck by the Native peoples of the Hudson Valley. Both the Native name and Finch’s title refer to the river’s downstream current and the push of the ocean against it. With his quintet, Finch marks time and meditates on flow. He also suggests that people experience time not just by looking at clocks but also by noticing small changes around them like the changing color of a river throughout the day.
