Not on viewLabel TextBorn in England, Miller immigrated to the United States in 1844/45 to pursue his artistic career. He settled in New York City and made sketching trips throughout upstate New York. In contrast to the panoramic landscapes painted at mid-century by his Hudson River School contemporaries, Miller's views tend to be more intimate in character.
From 1873 onwards, he prepared pen and ink sketches for a planned publication, 1000 Gems of American Landscape, which was unfinished when he died. This drawing is one of at least eight marine sketches he prepared for that publication. An inscription on the lower right of the drawing, "keep sail boat…[?]," suggests that Miller considered this drawing a preliminary design for another composition.
