Label TextGeorge Hunzinger was one of the most innovative furniture manufacturers in the second half of the nineteenth century. This chair features his patented folding chair design-the seat can fold inward and the back legs, which extend upward to form the arm brace, collapse flat. The austerity of the chair frame, with its turnings in imitation of bamboo, is in contrast to the elaborate original upholstery. The needlework features a floral motif on the seat with raised, tufted, and cut sections for a three-dimensional effect. The back of the chair features a montage of Christian symbols-a chalice and host, a crucifix, and an anchor-suggesting that the chair was used by a member of the clergy or in a rectory. ATD
