Label TextKlee made this whimsical etching the year he traveled to Northern Africa where the quality of light he encountered there resolved his earlier struggles to include color in his compositions. After returning to Europe he painted his first pure abstractions; pictures made solely of grids and colored shapes. This diminutive etching was made the same year but, in contrast to his abstractions, exhibits a dense skein of imaginary, figurative forms and childlike faces emerging from a dark background.
