Label TextThis drawing reflects the experience of Homer's sojourn in England and, simultaneously, is an important early example of his use of a site in the United States that would subsequently appear in numerous other works. A year before making the drawing Homer settled in Prout's Neck, Maine after having lived for twenty months in the English fishing village of Cullercoats, near Newcastle. Two features of the works he produced in Cullercoats reappear in this sheet: its monumentally modeled figure and the subject of a person staring out to sea. The rocky Prout's Neck coastline and pounding surf shown in this drawing was used by Homer in later years as the subject of some of his most impressivel paintings.
