Label TextUnlike most nineteenth-century American sculptors, John Rogers chose as his subject matter scenes of everyday life - known as genre scenes - rather than idealized subjects based on ancient art.
Rogers fashioned groups of figures so that their activities easily told a story, one that was often poignant or amusing. His subjects included The Slave Auction, Card Players, and The School Examination. Rogers' small sculptures were reproduced by the thousands in cast plaster that was painted slate gray or putty brown. These mass-produced works made art available to the country's growing, increasingly urban-oriented, middle class.
