Label TextThis loving cup or trophy was given to Thomas Proctor (1844-1920) in recognition of his many contributions to the city of Utica. Civic-minded and generous, Proctor and his wife Maria Williams Proctor (1853-1935) and his brother and sister-in-law Frederick (1856-1929) and Rachel Williams Proctor (1850-1915) made numerous contributions to Utica including donating land for the park system and supporting local hospitals, the Oneida County Historical Society, and the Utica Public Library. Proctor was part of the last generation of three families responsible for the formation of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute. In 1919, Proctor joined with his wife Maria and brother Frederick in the establishment of a foundation to carry out their plans for a cultural center for Utica. The front inscription on this piece reads: Our Friendship Bears An Unchanging Strength And Like the Memory of Good Acts, will Ever Be Sincere And Growing, Until Life And Its Sweetness Pass Away. The back inscription reads: As A Tribute To the Distinguished Upright and Public Spirited Citizen This Loving Cup Is Presented To THOMAS REDFIELD PROCTOR Upon The Occasion of A Dinner Given In His Honor By Personal Friends At The HOTEL UTICA In The Evening Of APRIL TWENTY-FIRST NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN UTICA, N.Y.
