Label TextHollis Sigler painted in an intentionally naive manner. The stagy look of her settings and the child-like method of describing them remove the paintings from the immediate present. In this manner, Sigler established an atmosphere of remembering dreams or childhood experiences. In You Enter This Place of Abandoned Desires Sigler transformed an empty lot that she passed every day on her way to work. The derelict bus and other cast-off objects create a symbolic environment of broken promises and lowered expectations. Some viewers, however, have interpreted the glowing sky as a sign of renewed hopefulness despite disappointment. MEM
