Label TextPieter Bruegel (usually referred to as "The Elder" to distinguish him from his elder son) was the most important Flemish painter of the 16th century. After his return from Italy sometime in the mid-1550s he concentrated on satirical, didactic and moralizing subjects often executed in the fantastic or grotesque manner of the Netherlandish artist Hieronymus Bosch who died in 1516. In 1556-57 Bruegel issued a series of seven allegorical prints depicting the vices. This print is one of the seven engravings he subsequently published in 1559-60 depicting the virtues. The engraved inscription "H. Cock excu-" along the lower left margin of the image indicates that this print was published by Hieronymous Cock, the most important publisher in Northern Europe in the 16th century.
